My sister gave me a gift card to Penzey's Spices like at least 2 birthdays ago. Since my birthday is in September, that means I've had this gift card for at least 2.5 years if not more. I kept meaning to use it then forgetting about it. Today I had to leave work to pick my car up from service anyway, so I figured I'd go for a drive and use the gift card.
My gf had been asking to get turmeric since it's on some list of spices that are supposed to improve your metabolism. So I got on kind of a curry-type kick of things with the turmeric, cardamom, galangal and ginger. I like using smoked paprika in this spice rub I make for grilling skirt and flank steak, and aleppo pepper is a nice upgrade over your usual red pepper flakes.
I spent a little bit more than the value of the gift card, which is exactly why stores want people to use gift cards. But I'm happy with my haul!

oh man I love that place. Get some 4S seasoned salt, I could eat it all by itself. And maybe I do

I actually need to stock up on both salt and peppercorns but I wasn't thrilled with the selection they had. The peppercorns were pricey and the salt just wasn't quite grabbing me. I want some decent peppercorns and coarse sea salt for my grinders, plus a big ole box of Diamond Crystal kosher salt.
My mom gave me a jar of fancy sea salt a while back but I use it more as a finishing salt because it's a little too wet to use in the grinder.
Also this reminds me I've been meaning to get a salt cellar for sprinkling.

I just rock any old kosher salt - funny fact, my gramma who owned the German deli called it Jewish Salt - and throw it in the Peugeot. Black pepper too, who cares. Friend of mine owns a salt store in town too. a SALT store. What is this world coming too. Everybody wants to spend alot of money to look like a foodie

I bought some vindaloo at the penzey's down in Philly (are they anywhere else?). Pretty good. I actually just won a contest on a travel blog , my Iranian/Persian spices showed up today. About to look up recipes to use them. IDK what they even are yet.

When I worked in a semi-fancy restaurant kitchen this was all we used. It's totally fine.
Our "salt cellars" on the line were these:
I do like seasoning by feel, with my highly-calibrated restaurant-experienced fingers. Because grinding out coarse sea salt when you need a whole bunch of it is a pain in the ass. I keep thinking "I want a salt cellar!" then forgetting about it. I just dump some from the box into my hand.
The fancy sea salt my mom gave me, I only use that if I'm making fussy little hors d'oeuvres, but I don't make that kind of stuff very often.

man yeah that is a great salt cellar. I think I have one full myself around here somewhere. Good for production If you arent baking and you have to measure, you cant cook

I actually just ordered this guy from Amazon for 9 bucks . It's hippie-friendly bamboo (no hippies were harmed in its production) and has a swiveling magnetic lid. My gf likes things in the kitchen to look nice, and be hippie-friendly.
